What happens when you stop
- Within days your sense of taste and smell begin to improve
- Within weeks to months breathing and circulation get better
- After a year your risk of heart disease falls sharply
- Over the long term your risk of cancer, stroke and lung disease keeps falling
What are pack-years?
Pack-years combine how much and how long you have smoked: one pack of 20 a day for one year is one pack-year. Doctors use it to judge lung and heart risk and whether checks are needed.
Help to quit
You are far more likely to stop for good with support. The HSE runs a free quit service, and a doctor can talk you through treatments that ease cravings and withdrawal, where they are suitable for you.
