Why weekends are hard for GP care

Many practices offer only Monday-to-Friday appointments, and out-of-hours services are meant for urgent problems that cannot wait. That leaves a gap: a sick note you need for Monday, a prescription running out on Sunday night, or a child’s fever you want checked but that is not an emergency.

A weekend online doctor appointment fills that gap for everyday health concerns, so you can get advice and a plan without waiting in a queue.

What a weekend online doctor can help with

  • Cold, flu, cough, sore throat and chest symptoms that are not severe
  • Urinary symptoms, skin problems, rashes and allergies
  • A sick certificate to cover a weekend illness, where clinically appropriate
  • A repeat prescription for a medicine you already take, sent to your pharmacy where appropriate
  • Advice about whether a problem can wait, or needs to be seen in person today

How to book a weekend appointment

  1. Pick a timeChoose Saturday or Sunday on the booking page. Times are shown live, in 15-minute slots, and you can book from 30 minutes from now.
  2. Tell us what is wrongFill in a short secure form with your details, your pharmacy and the reason for your visit.
  3. Authorise your cardYour card is authorised, not charged. The payment is only taken once a doctor confirms your appointment.
  4. See your doctorYour doctor calls you by video or phone at your appointment time.

When not to wait for a weekend appointment

An online doctor is not for emergencies. Call 112 or 999 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, severe bleeding, a suspected overdose, seizures, or a baby who is very drowsy or unresponsive. If you are unsure, the HSE guidance on urgent and emergency care can help you choose where to go.
