What is an online doctor?

An online doctor (also called an online GP, virtual GP or telehealth doctor) is a fully qualified doctor who sees you by secure video or phone instead of in a surgery. You describe your symptoms, the doctor asks questions, gives advice and — where it is clinically appropriate — can provide a prescription, a sick certificate or a referral.

It works well for everyday health concerns that do not need a physical examination, and your doctor will tell you straight away if you need to be seen in person.

What can an online doctor help with?

  • General medical advice for common illnesses and health concerns
  • Sick certificates and medical certificates for work or college
  • Repeat prescriptions and new prescriptions sent to your pharmacy
  • Referral letters where clinically appropriate
  • Women’s and men’s health, contraception and sexual health advice
  • Ongoing advice and prescription support for long-term conditions

Who can use DrCall?

DrCall is available to patients in Ireland. It is not suitable for medical emergencies — in an emergency call 112 or 999. It is also not intended for children under 3, and doctors cannot prescribe benzodiazepines, Z-drugs, opioids or stimulants. A face-to-face consultation may be needed if it is clinically necessary.

How much does an online doctor cost?

A DrCall consultation starts from €35. That one price covers your consultation, including a sick cert, repeat prescription or referral where your doctor considers it appropriate. Your card is only authorised when you book and is charged once a GP confirms your appointment.

Is it safe and confidential?

Yes. Consultations use secure, GDPR-compliant technology, our doctors follow Irish Medical Council guidelines, and the same doctor–patient confidentiality applies as in a surgery.
