What is a standard drink in Ireland?
In Ireland a standard drink contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. A pub measure of spirits, a small glass of wine or half a pint of normal-strength beer are each roughly one standard drink. A pint is about two, and a bottle of wine about seven.
Irish low-risk weekly guidelines
- Women: less than 11 standard drinks a week
- Men: less than 17 standard drinks a week
- Spread drinks over the week, with at least 2–3 alcohol-free days
- No more than 6 standard drinks on any one occasion
- No alcohol at all is safest in pregnancy, and for anyone under 18
Getting support
If you would like to cut down, a doctor can talk through your drinking in confidence, check your health and point you to support. If you rely on alcohol, do not stop suddenly without advice, as withdrawal can be dangerous.
