Understanding the two numbers

The top number (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure between beats. Both are measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Blood pressure ranges for adults

  • Below 90/60 — low
  • 90/60 to 120/80 — ideal
  • 120/80 to 140/90 — slightly raised
  • 140/90 or higher — high
  • 180/120 or higher — very high: measure again and get urgent advice

Taking an accurate reading at home

  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes first, back supported and feet flat
  • Rest your arm at heart level and use the right cuff size
  • Avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes before
  • Take two or three readings a minute apart and note them all

Why it matters

High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, but over time it raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The good news: it is easy to check, and treatable.

Frequently asked questions

Is 130/85 high blood pressure?

When is blood pressure an emergency?

A reading of 180/120 or higher, especially with chest pain, breathlessness, a severe headache, confusion or vision changes, needs urgent help — call 112 or 999.

Yes. A doctor can look at your readings, risks and medicines and advise what to do next, including in-person checks if needed.
