How to measure your waist
- Stand up straight and breathe out naturally
- Find the point halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone — often around the belly button
- Wrap a tape measure around, level and snug but not tight
- Read the measurement in centimetres
What your ratio means
- Under 0.4 — low; check your BMI too
- 0.4 to 0.49 — healthy
- 0.5 to 0.59 — increased health risk
- 0.6 or more — high health risk
Why it is useful
Fat stored around the organs is linked to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The ratio works across different heights and builds, which is why many health services use the simple rule: keep your waist to less than half your height.
Frequently asked questions
Is waist-to-height ratio better than BMI?
They measure different things. Waist-to-height reflects fat around the middle, which is closely linked to heart and diabetes risk; using both gives a better picture.
What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?
Between 0.4 and 0.49 for most adults.
