When students need a doctor’s note
- Missing an exam, a lab, a placement or a deadline because of illness
- Applying for an extension or an exam deferral
- Extenuating circumstances or a repeat-sitting application
- Time off a part-time job during term
How it works
- Book a timeChoose any free time, including evenings and weekends. Same-day appointments are often available.
- Explain your situationTell the doctor what is wrong and when it started. Mention the dates the certificate needs to cover.
- See the doctorYou speak by video or phone. If your doctor considers it clinically appropriate, they issue a certificate.
- Send it to your collegeYou receive your certificate as a PDF to submit to your department or exams office.
Good to know
- A doctor can only certify what they find, and what you tell them, in the consultation; they cannot back-date illness they did not assess
- Different colleges have different rules about what a certificate must say — check your department’s policy first
- Prices start from €35 — the same for students, with no membership
Looking after yourself during exams
Stress and poor sleep can make you ill at the worst time. Your doctor can also talk to you about sleep, anxiety and low mood, and point you to college counselling and HSE mental health services if you need extra support.
Frequently asked questions
Will my college accept an online doctor’s note?
Most colleges accept a medical certificate from a registered doctor, however the consultation took place. Check your department’s policy to be sure.
Can I get a note after I have already missed the exam?
Your doctor can only certify illness they assess in the consultation. Book as soon as you are unwell, and explain the dates you need covered.
Is there a student discount?
The price is the same for everyone: from €35, charged only once a doctor confirms.
Can a parent book for a student under 18?
Yes — a parent or guardian can book and must be present at the start of the consultation.
