How a doctor can help
- Work out what type of headache you have
- Identify triggers such as sleep, stress, caffeine, hormones or screen time
- Review the pain relief you take — overuse can cause more headaches
- Discuss treatment and prevention options where appropriate
Keep a headache diary
Before your appointment, note when headaches start, how long they last, what you were doing, what you took and whether it helped. It makes the consultation much more useful.
Headache warning signs — get urgent help
Call 112 or 999 for a sudden, severe “worst ever” headache, a headache with a stiff neck and fever or a rash, weakness, confusion, slurred speech, loss of vision, after a head injury, or with a seizure.
Frequently asked questions

Can an online doctor treat migraine?
They can assess you and, where appropriate, advise or prescribe treatment, and tell you if you need to be seen in person.
