Colds, Flu, Coughs and Chest Infections — See an Online Doctor

Most coughs, colds and flu get better on their own, but some need a doctor’s advice. If you are worried, not improving, or need a sick cert, an online doctor can help — often the same day.

When it is worth speaking to a doctor

  • Symptoms lasting more than 3 weeks, or getting worse after a few days
  • A high temperature that will not settle
  • Chest pain when you breathe or cough, or coughing up coloured phlegm
  • A long-term condition such as asthma, COPD, diabetes or heart disease
  • You are pregnant, over 65, or have a weakened immune system
  • You need a sick certificate for work

What the doctor can do

Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, how long you have had them and your health. Many viral infections need rest, fluids and simple pain relief rather than antibiotics, and the doctor will explain why. Where an infection may be bacterial or you need other treatment, they can prescribe it where appropriate, or advise you to be examined in person.

Call 112 or 999 if

You are struggling to breathe, your lips or skin look blue or grey, you have chest pain, you are confused or very drowsy, or you are coughing up blood.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get antibiotics online for a chest infection?

If your doctor considers them clinically appropriate after assessing you, yes. Many coughs are viral and do not need antibiotics.

Can I get a sick cert for flu?

Yes, where your doctor considers it appropriate.

How long does a cough last?

A cough after a cold or flu can last up to 3 weeks. Longer than that, or getting worse, should be checked.
